Quite possibly the most memorable day in recent American history, September 11, 2001 has forever changed this country. America was instantly paralyzed without warning and the lives of millions would never be the same. Detective Richard J. Miller of the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit was among the first Responders on scene. In the face of this tragedy, Detective Miller raised the first American flag over Ground Zero to honor his fallen comrades and to rally the other first responders. His hope was that many would be rescued and, as they were pulled from the debris, they would see the American flag.
Ultimately, many great American lives were lost that day, including 14 ESU friends, 343 New York City firefighters, 9 other NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers – yet, the flag remained to honor their memory and inspire others at Ground Zero throughout the difficult rescue and recovery efforts. The raising of the flag over ground zero quickly became a symbol that awakened a sense of national pride and unity that helped guide the country in the face of chaotic uncertainty. The Post 911 Foundation is striving to awaken the spirit of the American people that unified our nation in the aftermath of that fateful day.
Through our activities, the foundation believes the nation will re-capture the spirit of national unity found in the Post 9/11 moment and come together once again to promote peace, pride, and prosperity. In doing so, the foundation intends to recognize and assist those who have served our nation in the post 9/11 era who may be in need, so they will be restored, renewed, and empowered to succeed.
The Post 911 Foundation is a 501c3 Public Charity Organization that through grants, donations, and other charitable actions address issues faced by the First Responder Community
